Oldham and District Veteran Men's Bowling League

Clayton Cup Previous Winners

History of the Clayton Cup

The Clayton Cup was presented to the League in 1985 by, the then President, Ron Clayton. It replaced the Warren Cup which was retained for the runners up in the competition. Matches were played on a Monday afternoon.
The Warren Cup and initially the Clayton Cup were played under a format whereby each division had a knock out with away teams receiving 10 chalks. The winners of each division then played off with the Division A team off scratch, Div B +10, Div C +20 and Div D +30, with the final on a neutral green. Presumably the semi final away teams also got 10 chalks.
There had been a lot of disquiet for some years about the Warren Cup format and in 1986 in was agreed that all teams would be drawn in the one Clayton Cup knock out, with the Division A winners off scratch, then 1 chalk for each team below continuing through the divisions with the bottom club in Division D receiving a handicap of 41. Away teams would also receive 20 chalks.
In 1993 in addition to the handicaps above Division B teams were given 5 chalks, Div C. 15 and Div D. 30
At a sub committee meeting in December 2000 the members suggested that these handicaps be increased to Division B +15, Div C. +25 and Div D. +50. However there is no record of this suggestion being put forward to the 2001 AGM- but it was implemented and is so to date!

Since writing the above I have found that there was a previous Clayton Cup played for by the Veterans. In 1944 Alexandra Park A beat Stoneleigh Park for a cup presented to them by Mr J Clayton the League President. Presumably this is the cup which is now presented to the champions of the A Division? I'm not clear at this stage if there was a League format in 1944 and the top two played off for the trophy- will check this out as the first name on it was also Alexandra Park in 1942.
